Brazil built its authorised betting market in two steps. Law 13.756 of 2018 created the "fixed-odds betting" lottery modality at federal level, and Law 14.790 of 29 December 2023 set the licensing, tax, advertising and responsible-gambling rules for both sports betting and online games. The Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas (SPA/MF), part of the Ministry of Finance, became the regulator, and the authorised market opened on 1 January 2025.

That changed on 25 September 2026, when Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026 prohibited fixed-odds betting, including sports betting and online games, throughout Brazil, together with its advertising and intermediation. Deposits were barred from that date, the voluntary withdrawal window closed on 5 October and platforms were due to be offline on 6 October. The measure is provisional: Congress can approve it, amend it or let it lapse. Read our guide to the ban for the full timeline, and see the legal summary above for the status recorded in our country data.

AskBigBonus scores operators with a Trust Index built from licence standing, security, payment reliability, responsible-gambling tools and transparency. Brazil does not have a separate scoring system. Until the ban, one of the inputs for Brazil was whether an operator appeared on the SPA's official list of authorised companies, which the Ministry of Finance published as a spreadsheet of companies, brands and domains.

While Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026 is in force, no operator may lawfully offer fixed-odds betting to people in Brazil, so any operator information on this page is background information about the previous framework, not a recommendation to use a service from Brazil. We will update our Brazil coverage if Congress changes the measure.

The minimum gambling age in Brazil was 18. Crypto does not change the legal position: the measure prohibits the offering of fixed-odds betting whatever the payment method.

Brazilians move money with Pix, the central bank's instant payment system, which runs 24 hours a day and is free for individuals. Read our PIX payment-method page and the PIX explained guide for how it works, its night-time limit of R$ 1,000 per transaction and the Special Refund Mechanism (MED). Under the measure, banks and payment providers are limited to winding down existing betting transactions.

If gambling has been causing you or someone close to you harm, the Centro de Valorização da Vida (CVV) offers free emotional support by phone on 188, 24 hours a day, and peer-support groups such as Jogadores Anônimos exist.

• Do not deposit or play on any site that is still accessible. After the measure, a service that keeps taking bets from people in Brazil is operating outside the rules.
• Check your bank and payment-app statements between 9 and 14 October 2026 for the return of any balance you did not withdraw. Keep screenshots and receipts.
• Nobody legitimate charges a fee to return your own balance. Be wary of anyone who contacts you first offering to "release" or "recover" money.
• Read our guide to spotting fake betting sites and PIX scams.
• Check the official Ministry of Finance page on the measure for updates.
