How odds formats relate
Every odds format encodes the same two numbers: the implied probability of an outcome, and the payout multiple if it happens. Decimal odds are the simplest to convert from — multiply your stake by the decimal value to get your total payout (stake included). Fractional, American, and the Asian formats are all just different conventions for presenting that same multiple.
FAQs
Which odds format should I use?
Decimal is standard across Europe, Australia, and Canada; fractional is traditional in the UK and Ireland; American (moneyline) is standard in the US. Hong Kong, Malay, and Indonesian formats are common on Asian-facing books. They all express the same underlying probability, just in different notation.
How is implied probability calculated?
Implied probability = 1 / decimal odds, expressed as a percentage. It's what the odds suggest the true chance of an outcome is, before accounting for the bookmaker's margin.
Why do my calculated odds not exactly match a sportsbook's displayed odds?
Fractional and Hong Kong/Malay/Indonesian odds are often rounded to clean numbers by sportsbooks, so a converted decimal value may differ very slightly from what's displayed. The math here is exact; sportsbook displays are usually rounded.
