FAQs
What is matched betting?
"Backing" a bet at a bookmaker and "laying" the opposite outcome at a betting exchange, so the result is roughly break-even regardless of outcome — done to unlock free bet or bonus offers at close to zero net risk, rather than to profit from the qualifying bet itself.
Why is there a small loss on a qualifying bet?
Exchange commission on lay winnings means the lay side pays back slightly less than the back side risks, so a qualifying bet (using real money on both sides) usually costs a small amount — that cost is the price of unlocking the free bet or bonus that follows.
Why is a free bet only worth a percentage of its face value?
Because the stake itself isn't returned on a free bet win, only the winnings are — so the lay side needs a smaller lay stake, and the achievable guaranteed profit is a fraction of the free bet's face value (commonly 60-80% depending on the odds used).
