Bank Transfer

PIX is Brazil's instant payment system, launched by the country's central bank (Banco Central do Brasil) in November 2020. It moves money between Brazilian bank accounts in seconds, any time of day, using a registered "key" — a CPF number, phone number, email, or a scanned QR code — instead of full account and routing details. It has become the dominant way Brazilian players fund online accounts, largely displacing card payments and bank transfers for domestic transactions.

Notice for players in Brazil

Notice for players in Brazil (verified 6 October 2026): Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026, published on 25 September 2026, prohibits fixed-odds betting in Brazil, including sports betting and online games, and limits banks and payment providers to winding down existing betting transactions. As we read it, using PIX to fund a betting account from Brazil is not possible while the measure is in force, and Congress can still change or reject it. Read our guide to the ban for the dates and what happens to balances. Nothing on this page is an offer or a recommendation for players located in Brazil.

PIX at a glance

PIX is Brazil's instant payment system. It was created and is operated by the Banco Central do Brasil, it runs 24 hours a day on every day of the year, and for individuals it is free. A payment moves from one bank account to another in seconds using a simple "key" (a CPF taxpayer number, a phone number, an e-mail address or a random key) or a QR code. By January 2026 more than 170 million people, roughly 80% of Brazil's population, had used it. The sections below explain how PIX works as a payment method, how it compares with cards, e-wallets and crypto, what to check in a cashier, how to keep your money safe and how the 2026 betting ban affects it.

How PIX works as a payment method

PIX replaces the long list of banking details with a key that points to an account. When a payment is requested, the payer opens a banking app, chooses PIX, scans a QR code, pastes a "copia e cola" code or types a key, checks the recipient's name and confirms. Both sides get a receipt with a transaction identifier within seconds.

There are two practical points that explain why PIX became so popular for online payments in Brazil:

  • Immediacy. The recipient sees the money almost at once, so a merchant or a platform can credit an account in real time instead of waiting for a transfer to clear.
  • Low friction. There is no card number to type and no card network in the middle. For the payer the action is a tap or a scan in an app they already use every day.

Because the money moves directly between bank accounts, a PIX payment is, by default, final. There is no "chargeback" in the card sense. The Central Bank created the Mecanismo Especial de Devolução (MED) to help victims of fraud, scams and crime try to recover money. A payer has 80 days from the original payment to ask their bank, banks have about seven days to analyse the case, and a confirmed return is due within about 96 hours, in full or in part depending on what remains in the receiver's account. The MED does not cover simple user mistakes such as a wrong key, or commercial disputes with no sign of fraud. In September 2026 the Central Bank also extended from 30 to 80 days the time a receiver has to contest a refund made through the mechanism. Recovery is never guaranteed, which is why caution before you pay matters more than anything after.

PIX compared with cards, e-wallets and crypto

If you are comparing payment methods, the differences below are the ones that matter in daily use. They describe the payment methods themselves, not any particular operator.

  • PIX vs. bank cards. Cards can be disputed through the card issuer, but they carry fees for merchants and are not always accepted for every kind of payment. PIX is free for individuals, faster, and works with a plain bank account, but it is harder to reverse.
  • PIX vs. e-wallets. E-wallets hold a balance in a separate account and charge fees on certain operations. PIX moves money directly between bank accounts, with no intermediary balance.
  • PIX vs. bank transfers (TED). Older transfers were tied to banking hours and settlement windows. PIX is continuous.
  • PIX vs. crypto. Crypto transfers depend on a network, a wallet and confirmations, and value can move between the time you send and the time you receive. PIX is denominated in reais and settles in seconds, but it requires a Brazilian account.

None of these is "best" in every situation. PIX is hard to beat for speed and cost inside Brazil; cards give you a dispute route; crypto is not tied to a country's banking system.

What to check in any cashier that offers PIX

When a platform lists PIX, do not assume that everything works the same way as in your banking app. Before you pay, check the following in the platform's own cashier and terms:

  1. Whether PIX is offered for deposits only or for withdrawals too. Some services accept PIX in but pay out by another method.
  2. Minimum and maximum amounts. Limits are set by the platform, and your bank also has its own PIX limits, including the default night-time limit of R$ 1,000 per transaction for individuals between 20:00 and 06:00.
  3. Processing time and verification. A deposit may be instant, but a withdrawal often needs an identity check first.
  4. Name matching. Payments usually must come from, and go back to, an account in your own name. A PIX from someone else's account can be refused or blocked.
  5. Fees and currency conversion. If the platform's account currency is not the real, find out who converts the amount and at what rate.
  6. The recipient's name on the PIX screen. The name that your banking app shows should match the company you think you are paying. If it is a private individual, stop.

PIX security: limits, scams and good habits

PIX is safe when used carefully, but it is also a favourite tool of fraudsters because it is immediate. The protections you control are simple:

  • Set limits. Lower the per-transaction, daily and night-time limits in your banking app to what you really need.
  • Verify the recipient. Read the name shown before you confirm.
  • Never share passwords, tokens or codes. No real institution will ask you for them, and none will ask you to make a PIX to unlock your own money.
  • Beware of the common traps: fake QR codes, "wrong transfer" messages asking you to send the money back to a different account, fake support calls, and "release fee" requests.
  • Report fast. If you were the victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately (you can do it in the app) and ask about the MED, and keep screenshots and receipts.

Our guide to spotting fake betting sites and PIX scams in Brazil goes through each of these in detail.

PIX and online betting in 2026

PIX became one of the most used ways to fund online betting accounts in Brazil during the period when fixed-odds betting was licensed there, because deposits were instant and withdrawals came back fast. That period ended on 25 September 2026 with Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026. In summary, as of 6 October 2026:

  • fixed-odds betting, including sports betting and online games, is prohibited nationwide, and the measure also covers advertising and intermediation;
  • new deposits were barred from 25 September;
  • the voluntary withdrawal window closed on 5 October at 23:59 Brasília time and platforms were due to be unavailable on 6 October;
  • balances not withdrawn are to be returned to the original payment accounts between 9 and 14 October, with Caixa Econômica Federal acting as the fallback afterwards;
  • Congress has 60 days, extendable by another 60, to approve, amend or reject the measure.

Outside Brazil, the situation is different, but PIX itself is only available through Brazilian bank accounts. The operators listed above on this page are shown for information about which services publicly list PIX in their cashier; their availability for any given person depends on where that person is located and on local law. If you are in Brazil, please do not try to deposit anywhere.

Responsible gambling and where to get help

A fast, frictionless payment method is convenient, but it also makes it easier to spend more than you planned. If you gamble anywhere, set limits before you start, never chase losses and never gamble with money you need for essentials. If gambling is causing you harm, in Brazil the Centro de Valorização da Vida (CVV) offers free emotional support by phone on 188, 24 hours a day, and peer-support groups such as Jogadores Anônimos exist. This is not medical advice, and talking to a doctor or psychologist is always a good step.

PIX frequently asked questions

What does PIX stand for and who runs it?

PIX is the name of Brazil's instant payment system. It was created and is operated by the Banco Central do Brasil, and banks, fintechs and other authorised institutions connect to it.

Is PIX free?

For individuals, sending and receiving PIX is free. Businesses may pay their provider a fee, which is generally lower than a card fee.

How fast is a PIX payment?

Payments are settled within seconds, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays.

Is there a limit on PIX payments?

Each bank sets limits you can usually change in your app. For individuals there is also a default night-time limit of R$ 1,000 per transaction, in principle between 20:00 and 06:00.

Can a PIX payment be reversed?

Not automatically. If you were the victim of fraud or a scam, contact your bank immediately and ask about the Special Refund Mechanism (MED), which has an 80-day window from the original payment. A simple mistake, such as a wrong key, is not normally covered. Recovery is not guaranteed.

How many PIX keys can I have?

Individuals can register up to five keys per account and companies up to 20. A key can be linked to only one account at a time, and you can move it between banks.

Do I need a Brazilian bank account to use PIX?

Yes. PIX works through accounts at institutions authorised by the Banco Central do Brasil, and you register keys such as your CPF or phone number in your own banking app.

Can I use PIX to deposit into a betting account in Brazil today?

No. Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026 prohibits fixed-odds betting in Brazil and limits payment institutions to winding down existing betting transactions. Congress can still change the measure.

Is PIX safe?

PIX itself is a secure, central-bank-operated system, but because it is instant and not automatically reversible it is a common target for scams. Verify the recipient, set limits and never share passwords or codes.
